  “ drdoom Medieval Castle
zoom   << 1st STEP

For a pixel art composition, I’m always starting from an object that will become a reference for the scale for all the other elements of the creation.
For "Medieval Castle", I started from a tower (at the start it was a simple cylinder) that I repeated many times. After I did the link between the towers with a wall to delimit the enclosure of the castle. Different types of wall and towers are created, then the battlements are added.
2nd STEP >>

Once the enclosure is done, I can attack the construction of the castle. It is made of a large and high enclosure, over-hanged by a keep and circled by four towers.
A castle would be nothing without a drawbridge so I add this and some more details, the roof of the towers, a stair, doors, flags above the towers and little houses on different angles.

Then I close the enclosure, I add a door to the castle and a well.
Then we can start to place some textures, they’re adding depth and detailed to the image.
Different patterns are created then added on the walls, roofs and on the ground.
4th STEP >>

To finalize the castle, we have to add some details. First of all a keep and a chapel.
The four towers circling the keep are little straight and monotonous. I refine them and add balconies. To finish, I draw loop-holes on the remparts.
We now have to create the scenery around the castle. I’m adding grass, ditch and some animals in the courtyard.

I continue to anime the interior of the courtyard creating some objets : carts, heavy wood cases, opened and closed barrels on different angles... To add some more details and more color, I draw food, fruits and clothes displays.
Then I add field around the castle leaving some space to make a farm.
6th STEP >>

To end the base of the scenery, I add wheat fields and draw a soil path around the castle going out of the image.
A wood sign I guiding adventurers were the path are crossing each other.
I start to construct the farm with little buildings of different sizes and with little woods shelters.

I finish the farm adding wood panels on the walls and chimneys. An essential ingredient is still missing in this farm universe : animals.
So I add pigs and the horses already created, and, to complete, I draw ducks and hens that I duplicate at some places on the image even on non-acessible places (like the top of the towers, on boxes).
I duplicate some barrels, boxes and carts that I put at random places in the image.
8th STEP >>

To finish the area of the castle, I draw many models of trees and flowers that I repeat a little bit everywhere in the image.
We now have to give life to this image adding characters : farmers, gardians, a knight and a princess. Each character is drawn from the same model, then dress up and put in a situation.

I add some gangsters ready to attack the castle. The drawing is now finished, I add the shades and adapt the colors to add some athmosphere to the image.
10th STEP >>

The dawing done, I had the idea to do a pixel art work with it. I first drew the coat of arms, inspired by a medieval drawing found on the web on which I wrote the title of the drawing with a similar font and the address of my website.
Then I drew the frame and I added some engravings created using again the «natural» pattern of the coat of arms.
